Why Late Fall in Cuyuna is Minnesota’s Best Kept Secret

When most people picture a trip to Cuyuna, they think of summer swims, bonfires under the stars, or the brilliant colors of September. But tucked between fall peak and the first big snow is one of the most underrated times of the year to visit — late fall in Cuyuna.

We have lived in Crosby/Cuyuna for 7 years and walking out into a drizzly day here on the mine lakes is something out of a fairy tale. It helps us become more present, breathe deeper and wash away the stress of everyday life. Walk to the top of Overlook Point, light a candle in your cabin, enjoy a cleansing sauna and a steamy shower. Snuggle up in your favorite pajamas and read a book from bed while you watch the trees sway in the cool wind. Cozy up to a bonfire in the evening while gazing at the bright stars above and find yourself leaving your phone behind to enjoy a long, slow and wonderful getaway.

Larson Lake is a hidden gem. It is one of our favorite places to hike after the leaves fall and before the deep snow comes (it turns into a groomed xcountry ski trail).

Why we Love Late fall in our Minnesota Cabins:

1) See Deeper Into the Forest

After the leaves drop, the forest opens up in a whole new way. The floor glows with rusty reds and mossy greens, and you can see farther into the distance than any other season — perfect for spotting wildlife along the Cuyuna red dirt single track rails (& the Cuyuna Paved Trail) or even right outside your cabin windows our property!25) Red Dirt Trails, Without the Crowds (or Bugs)

Late fall is a dream season for mountain biking Cuyuna late fall and hikers alike. The trails are quieter after summer, the air is crisp, and the bugs are gone. Whether you’re pedaling through the world-class red dirt trails or taking a slow walk on the Cuyuna Paved trail or a morning walk with coffee in hand to Yawkey Mine Lake, you’ll find peace and space that’s rare earlier in the year. It’s the perfect way to reset after a busy Summer and Fall. Our favorite hike in Cuyuna is Larson Lake which is only a 10 minute drive from your cabin at Cuyuna Cove. Rolling hills, wetlands and NO bugs make this a spectacular time of year to hike this area before the snow falls (& it turns into a gorgeous groomed xcountry ski route).

Rain or sunshine…views from your bed at Cuyuna Cove late Fall and into Winter are soothing for the soul. There is something magical about a rainy day in the cabin with the candles lit, reading and resting to the sound of rain falling and trees swaying in the wind.

2) Slow Evenings at our Cuyuna Cove Sauna

As the temperature drops, evenings are best spent slipping into the redwood sauna at Cuyuna Cove (or wake up and move your body first followed by a heavenly am sauna). Pair it with a bonfire later in the day or curl up in bed with forest views - a rhythm that feels calming and restorative after the busy Minnesota summer season.

Detox and breathe deeply in our redwood sauna included in your stay at Cuyuna Cove.

3) Shops & Restaurants are Less Crowded

No need to wait in line this time of year. It is lovely to walk/bike/drive the short distance to Historic Main Street Crosby from Cuyuna Cove and not feel overwhelmed by other visitors. Grab a wood fired pizza at Rafferty’s, a beer, NA option at Cuyuna Brewing, a latte in the morning at Red Raven and of course handmade lactose free ice cream and amazing shopping at Shop Victual.

Just up the street from us is Historic Main Street Crosby. Make a french press coffee in your cabin or head to Red Raven for tea or a latte and walk to Yawkey Mine Lake with a hot beverage in hand.

4) A Bonus: Lower Rates + More Availability

Late fall means more flexibility in booking and reduced nightly rates. You’ll have the cabins, trails, and even town to yourself, making it one of the most affordable and relaxing times to experience your Cuyuna fall getaway.

Walk, bike or drive to Huntington Mine lake after the leaves fall and watch the sun fade behind the Cuyuna hills. Or, hike to the top of Overlook Point with stunning views of the entire area.

5) Experience the Calm After the Rush

In the city, late fall can feel gray and dull. But up North in Cuyuna, it’s vibrant, cozy, and full of quiet adventures. This hidden season is waiting to surprise you.
